   The best as I’ve experienced ( u had few accounts for over 5 years with different banks just to see the difference) is St. George/Westpac. Although they have merged together so the benefits are same, you can open an account in either of the Bank. ANZ is probably another best one with lots of benefits and no/less charges. Other banks are average ones with hidden costs. Welcome to Aus!!!

   Bypass the banks and find a credit union.

   KKM, while I was over there, I opened one with Westpac, for direct deposits etc. I also had a little account with a credit union also. I found the credit union to be excellent with their rates.

   Hmmm…Personal choice? NAB for me and perhaps for new immigrants too. They are one of the ‘Big Four’ but always seem to be looking at new ideas for helping new and existing customers and their customer service is good. They are very good for home loan policies and have an excellent ATM network. Also they seem to offer true ‘fee free’ monthly transaction accounts. Their staff seem to be generally helpful.

   I like Bendigo Bank, just because they are much more friendly and helpful that the big banks. When you ring your branch the phone is actually answered by a real person there, it is not like say the Commonwealth where you talk to a machine as you get transferred to department after department of people that don’t want to help you.
   Plus when you go in to see them there isn’t a queue stretching from the teller to the door either, and the staff are always nice.
