How do I keep the cookies setting from changing itself in Internet Explorer?
Here is the situation.
1) I open up the Internet Options link in IE.
2) I reset the privacy/cookie settings from “accept all cookies” to “medium-high.”
3) I click “apply” and “OK.”
4) I close IE.
5) I open IE and check my Internet Options.
6) The privacy setting is back to “accept all cookies.”
It’s on my dad’s computer and I’m not exactly sure what this is. I used msconfig a few days back to adjust his startup processes because there was a lot of crap running in the background.
Help?
Try doing a System Restore to an earlier point and try it again. If not, search for it on Microsoft’s technical support site here: http://support.microsoft.com/
Hope this helps!
There might be a trojan or piece of spyware causing this problem. I would recommend starting from scratch and trying the following. A friend recently had a similar problem and this worked (pay close attention to the use of HijackThis).
1) Download and install a firewall and Anti-Virus software if you dont already have some. The firewall that comes with Windows is basic and does not block all traffic or malicious code. I highly recommend the free version of Zone Alarm (www.zonelabs.com) or AVG (www.avg.com). Symantec and McAfee have great AV options.
2) Download and run SpyBot S&D and Ad-Aware Personal, both available for free download at CNet’s download.com.
*I recommend running these while running your computer in SafeMode. (Reboot and continuously press F8 till you get to the boot menu allowing you to choose SafeMode.)
3) Remove any malicious entries from both programs.
4) Download and run HijackThis and remove any malicious entries from there.
Please be careful deleting files from all programs, as you could potentially delete files needed by your computer to run. If you are not sure which entries could be malicious (its usually obvious in SpyBot and Ad-Aware…not so much sometimes in HijackThis). Google is a great tool to use if you want to search a particular file name to find any important information about it (if it is a known virus, spyware, ect).
Hope this helps, I know how annoying this is.
